'This is a sad day,' Sam told the Echo.
'George is part of the fabric at Ninian Park - he has done such a lot for this club.
'Personally, I will miss him in the dug-out. I always sat next to him and we chatted during games.
'We talked long and hard about the situation before this decision was made.'
Wood's departure is part of what looks to be a goalkeepeing merry go round at the club. As things stand Neil Alexander is still No'1 and will remain so unless a decent offer comes in. If that happened City could look to Liverpool's Scott Carson.
It looks like Martyn Margetson will come back to the club after being released and become the new keeping coach, replacing Wood. He will also retain his player status and cover as third keeper behind Alexander and possibly Mark Howard. The 19 year old has been released by Arsenal and is reported to be a target for Dave Jones.
