Wolves v Cardiff City. Match preview

Last updated : 10 March 2006 By Michael Morris
Firstly Dave Jones is a former Wolves manager (in fact his last club before joining City). He did have some time off between the two jobs.

'Personally, I hope I am given a warm welcome," said Jones. I did a good job for Wolves, took them to the Premiership and when I left they were in a good position.

'But I can't worry about how people will greet me - that won't influence me at all.

'I am going back to one of my former clubs and that in itself is nice, but there are only three points on offer. The same as in any other game.

Add in three former WBA players in the City starting line up. Darren Purse, Jason Koumas and Ricky Scimeca all played for the Baggies, Wolves' bitter rivals.

'I hope Wolves' fans don't let me down, they always kept a special reception for anybody who had ever played for West Bromwich Albion,' said Jones.

'We have three ex-Baggies in our team and they understand the situation."

Then there's the fans. Wolves "supporters" tried to ambush the exiting City fans last season after some poor policing. The West Midlands force seemed content to allow a build up of home support outside the away exits before allowing Cardiff fans wo walk right into them. Conspiracy theorists could chew over that one for a few hours.

Last but not least there's the fact that both teams are on 55 points, just one point behind Preston who occupy the last play off spot. With Crystal Palace not playing until Monday there's the chance to close the gap on them to just 2 points. A win is huge for either side.

On the pitch City are likely to remain unchanged from last weeks 1 - 0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Former Wolves player Kevin Cooper is back in the squad after being out with a back injury.

City (probable): Alexander, Ardley, Purse, Cox, Barker, Koumas, Scimeca, Whitley, ledley, Thompson and Jerome.

Subs: Margetson (from) Weston, Loovens, Boland, Cooper, Mulryne, Nsungu and Ferretti.

Wolves could be without Darren Anderton, the former Spurs and England star has a hamstring injury. Winger Mark Kenneday is rated 50/50 after sustaining a gash on his foot.

Wolves striker Carl Cort is fully aware of the knowledge of the club that Dave Jones has

“I think Dave will very much be up for it and trying to get one over on us,” said Cort.

“They are doing pretty well at the moment and don’t seem to be drawing many games, either winning or losing them.

“He’s obviously going to know a lot about us and am sure will be doing his best to stop our key players playing.

“He knows about me as well and I’m sure he’ll be telling his centre halves all my strengths and weaknesses,

“But I’m confident that we’ve still got enough about us to win that game.”

Jones bought Cort from Newcastle and the striker is grateful to him for rescuing his career

“It was a difficult time for me when Wolves came in and he showed a lot of trust and faith in me. All credit to him in what he’s done at Cardiff. They’ve done really well and surprised a lot of people.”

Over the last 6 games Wolves have won 3 and drawn 3. Their last two games were both goalless draws.

City have won 3, drawn 1 and lost two of their last 6 matches. If I was to predict an outcome I'd go for the draw.

Kick off at Molineux is at 3:00pm. Let's hope at 4.55pm we have added three points to our tally.
