"We spent several hours talking to Cardiff City but Peter has gone back to the Midlands to think things over.
"He is going to sleep on it before deciding what to do next. Our discussions with Cardiff City were positive but nothing was decided.
"It seems we can't go any further with personal terms. It will be Peter's decision in the end whether he signs for Cardiff City or not."
It was reported yesterday that the deal was due to complete last night but that may have been a bit presumptious.
As with club policy no mention of any transfers will be made until the deal is done so there is not word yet from Cardiff City.
"Peter spoke to Dave Jones first and he's very pleased with the football side of things at Cardiff," Horton continued.
"He'll be keen to talk to everybody when the deal is actually done, but is waiting for the moment."
City are still be linked with Rowan Vine from Luton but it seems unlikely the club will pay the silly money figures of over £2m being bandied around. Jon Stead from Sunderland is another name linked but it's thought he complete a deal to Sheff Utd afetr the Black Cats agreed a bid of around £1m from Neil Warnock.
Peter Ridsdale has said he hopes to have two new players in the squad for Saturday's game against Southend. Whittingham is one of them, who could the other one be?
