Cardiff City dug out a massive three points against WBA at Cardiff City Stadium.
Whittingham rose bravely to head home Craig Noone's cross as Cardiff won a crucial battle with fellow strugglers West Brom.
Cardiff were at the visitors from the first whistle and will feel slightly disappointed it was 0 - 0 at half time. West Brom offered nothing in the opening 45 mins.
Noone, starting for the first time this season, was the difference between the sides. His pace and creativity gave Cardiff outlets they have been lacking.
The cross from Noone for City's goal was met by Whittingham and he headed the ball past Boaz Myhill. Whittingham was clattered as he scored a rare headed goal.
Previous to that Whitts looked like he was struggling with the pace, he was second best to several challenges but his delivery from set pieces is superb and he committed himself to win the ball that saw City's winner.
Albion pressed during the final 20 mins but a combination of poor finishing and a stunning Save by David Marshall kept the Baggies out.
The win takes City to 17 points and crucially keeps them in touch with mid table.
