CARDIFF CITY issued a "text off" message to their critics last night after they turned on the style to record their first league away victory since December 20 against Northampton Town at Sixfields stadium. Robert Earnshaw's predatory 59th-minute strike - his 27th goal of the season - was enough to give Lennie Lawrence's Bluebirds all three points. City arrived in Northampton in fourth place and had taken just eight points from their last 18, but this win should re-ignite their automatic promotion charge. Highly critical text messages that regularly appear in a local newspaper - some of those messages have been personal - have infuriated Lawrence and his play-ers who have pleaded with supporters to get off their backs as the season approaches the critical stage.

CARDIFF CITY manager Lennie Lawrence has urged his side to beat Barnsley at Ninian Park on Saturday and record back-to-back victories in the league for the first time in three months. Lawrence saw his Bluebirds beat Northampton Town 1-0 at Sixfields Stadium last night to notch up their first league away win in the Second Division since December 20 when they won 2-1 at Colchester. And if they beat Barnsley it will be the first time they have carved out two straight Second Division victories since the end of October and beginning of November when they beat Mansfield and Peterborough.

STEVE Jenkins will sign for Cardiff City today. That looked certain this morning after the Welsh international full-back agreed terms with the Bluebirds until the end of the season. Cardiff have taken over his contract from cash-strapped Huddersfield, who have given their backing to the move. Jenkins, though, isn't coming to Cardiff merely for the rest of the season. "He's a good professional and initially he is coming in as cover," said Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence.

THERE are 17 League matches to go and Cardiff City are in the mood for promotion. They have found the fluency, drive and passion to grab one of those top two places. Lennie Lawrence has gambled on playing with two wingers, a system which increases the attacking options and can make a team more vulnerable at the back, and the players have, over the last two games, made the most of it. The only real criticism which could be aimed at the Bluebirds last night was they failed to kill off Northampton in the first half. They opened up Northampton, created chances, but didn't put them away.

STEVE JENKINS completed his free transfer to Cardiff City yesterday hoping the switch will resurrect his Wales career. The 30-year-old right-back was allowed to quit City's Second Division rivals Huddersfield Town because the Terriers have not been paying him his full salary since November. Even though the Merthyr-born player was contracted to Huddersfield until the end of the season, he became a free agent as the Terriers were in breach of contract.

CARDIFF CITY striker Robert Earnshaw said he aims to take the heat off Bluebirds manager Lennie Lawrence by continuing to hammer in the goals. The Bluebirds hit-man struck his 27th goal of the season as City beat Northampton 1-0 on Tuesday night, a victory which took some of the pressure off Lawrence. Earnshaw said, "You can't fault Lennie. His record since he became Cardiff manager is a great one.

SCOTT Young and his Cardiff City team-mates at the back are intent on laying the foundation to the Bluebirds' promotion dash. Long-serving Young, who has been granted a testimonial season for 2003-2004, and his fellow defenders had an impromptu meeting before the 1-0 win at Northampton. Goalkeeper Neil Alexander plus Young, Chris Barker, Rhys Weston and Gary Croft had a chat and Young said: "We got together and talked about the need for us to keep a clean sheet.

CARDIFF City manager Lennie Lawrence today reflected on his team's Nationwide League win at Northampton Town on Tuesday and said: "Somebody is going to get walloped soon." Robert Earnshaw grabbed his 27th goal of the season to earn City a 1-0 win at the Sixfields Stadium as they turned on a display which should have resulted in a more emphatic success. Lawrence has already said the starting line-up against Barnsley at Ninian Park on Saturday will be the same again.

CARDIFF CITY goal machine Robert Earnshaw has pledged his future to the club - even if the Bluebirds fail to win promotion this season. Earnshaw has bagged 27 goals this season, despite being omitted for the first six games, and his exploits have seen him linked with various Premiership clubs. But Wales international Earnshaw said he will leave Ninian Park only if Bluebirds owner Sam Hammam wants him to. In his most revealing interview yet, Earnshaw spoke about:

LENNIE LAWRENCE yesterday revealed his plan to sign Manchester United winger Luke Chadwick had been put "on ice" because of Jason Bowen's fine form. The Cardiff City manager had wanted to sign Chadwick on loan with a view to a permanent signing but, with First Division clubs Reading and Stoke also tracking the 22-year-old who has made 39 outings for United, Lawrence now says he might not even need the man from Cambridge.

NEW Cardiff City signing Steve Jenkins said he has had to dip into his personal savings because he had not been paid by former club Huddersfield for two months. The Wales international defender completed his free transfer to Ninian Park earlier this week from the crisis-hit York-shire club, who are reportedly £6m in the red. Jenkins, 30, was contracted to the Terriers until the end of this season, but he became a free agent because the Second Division club was in breach of contract by not paying him his full salary.
