"Every time we make a mistake we drop points," said Lennie Lawrence.
"We are not quite good enough in either penalty area - Cardiff City are the nearly team of the Second Division. The answer is to keep at it, to learn from these lapses. I'm not certain the answer is new players, maybe it is, but we have to keep at it."
Barnsley came for the draw, a goalless one, only a penalty generously awarded by the referee gave them a chance for their only shot on target all game. The other two they had were made a total of three efforts on goal, shocking.
City on the other hand had 14 efforts but worringly only 4 were on target and apart from Gavins goal the other three were blocked before the keeper needed break into a sweat.
City allowed Barnsley too much time to win 50/50 balls and again can be critisised over overplaying and trying to walk the ball into the net.
Gavin Gordon looked lively when he came on and maybe he can stake a claim for a longer spell in the team.
After his goal he ran the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of his son, Caius, in the Canton Stand
"Caius was in the stand at the other end of the ground, but I had to run down there and celebrate with him," said Gavin. "I couldn't let that opportunity go.
"I don't know too much about the goal expect that when the ball was played in I jumped as high as I could and tried to head goalwards. When I turned round it was in the corner and I couldn't have been happier."
City go away to Peterborough next week and they must start a run of wins against lower placed teams.
It was not only Cardiff who blew points. Oldham lost, Bristol City lost, Wigan and QPR drew. The only winners in the top 6 were Crewe. It's now turing into a three horse race, the point earned by City was a point gained over Oldham and Bristol and sees a gap opening at the top. Wigan have 70 points, Crewe 61 and Cardiff 58 but City have played a game less. Oldham are 3 points behind City having played a game more.
Next week is very interesting. Bristol City entertain Brentford on Tuesday, a win would bring them level with Oldham still 3 points behind City, anything less is a bonus.
Next Saturday its 2nd v 1st. Crewe entertain Wigan. City are away as are Oldham and Bristol. A win for Cardiff is so crucial to stay close to the top.
