During the summer he was placed on the transfer list but a freak accident whilst on holiday kept him under the care of the Cardiff City treatment room and it's the Bluebirds who are now benefitting.
"It's a strange one because if I hadn't been injured then I would not be at the club now," said Thompson.
"It's just a matter of fate I am still with Cardiff City and not playing at another club.
"It had been kind of agreed I would move on, but my injury put paid to that.
"From then on it was a completely different mindset to get myself back in the team, which I've done.
"I've worked hard to achieve that - and I'm really pleased I'm back."
Thompson will lead the line at Ashton Gate tomorrow. Most likely with Jimmy Floyd Hassebaink.
