svenThe former England boss said “We want to go through to the next round, but we will alter things.

“We have a big squad and it is a good opportunity for many other players.

“Matt Oakley is out with a back problem, but Steve Howard might start and on-loan Michael Johnson will start for sure. He has looked good in training and played a reserve game last Tuesday and looked very good. We hope he will play the full 90 minutes.

“I don’t see the Carling Cup as a distraction and we want to go through.”

Malky Mackay will also change his starting line up from the Blackpool game.

He is likely to start with Steve McPhail and Robert Earnshaw in his line up. For McPhail it will be a first appearance this season.

“It’s like signing a new player to have Stephen back,” said Mackay. “I have a quality player available who I have not been able to use until now, and that’s great.

“Stephen has been a model professional since the first day I came in here. He’s had an awful lot on his plate to deal with over the last 18 months. Stephen has had problems since I’ve been here too. Our medical team have been working with him every day.

“It’s fantastic to see him back and ready for first-team action.

“He has not had an easy time, but he has a lot of support at this club. It’s great that he’s back in a blue jersey.

“The measure of the man is how he goes about his job and his daily life. It’s a testament to his character that he’s made sure he’s back.”

“Earnie is a great professional and a good personality around the club,” continued Mackay.

“He was disappointed to be dropped, of course, and it wasn’t an easy decision. I thought long and hard about it and felt it was the right thing to do.

“It’s about the team, our whole squad, and Earnie knows that. He is part of the group and a top, top striker. He has done great for us.”
