Thompson will be eligable to play against Burnley this Saturday at Ninian Park.
The 27 year old striker was won over after meeting Dave Jones, Sam and Peter Ridsdale
"I left Rangers on really good terms. They are all fantastic people there.
"One or two clubs showed an interest in me, but Cardiff showed a firm interest.
"I came down and spoke to the manager, Sam Hammam and Peter Ridsdale and I was really impressed with what they had to say.
"I had a long discussion with them on Sunday night. We discussed a lot of things and what impressed me was their ambition. Cardiff is a very ambitious club."
