No one really took much notice. An name from out of left field.
Today that has been bounced on it's head with a surge of betting followed by the national media running with 'Shearer to Cardiff' headlines.
Of course the club has said nothing but the explosion of opinion tonight after the Daily Mirror, Sky and other sources claimed that it's as good as a done deal.
Another contact of mine, with access to Shearer in a non footballing way has told me it's a done deal and the talk is that an announcement could be made at sometime on Wednesday.
After names like Hughton, Mackay, McInnes, Di Matteo etc the likely appointment now of Shearer is quite incredible.
Proven managers have been overlooked for a man who has taken charge of just 8 games as Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League.
Maybe Shearer will become a great manager. Maybe he will get Cardiff City promoted with a quality squad playing superb football but there's a part of me that sees this as a big risk by the board who could be using the name 'Alan Shearer - Premier League star' as a vehicle to gain interest in the club from the far east and maybe a gamble that a big name can attract big players.
They may be right, but it does seem a risky strategy.
