"It's time to get the problem sorted for once and for all," Dave Jones told the Echo. "Every time Riccy gets to 95 per cent fit he seems to break down again.
"We were hoping an injection could sort it out, but that hasn't worked. Now the surgeon will go in and take a look.
"It is frustrating for Riccy and we want to get him sorted out and playing again as quickly as possible. We won't know how long that will take until after the surgeon has investigated."
Two of City's other injured players are closing in on full fitness and should both be back for City's next game at Southampton in 14 days time.
Trevor Sinclair has been treated after a piece bone flaked away in a tackle against West Brom. He played against Barnsley but was subbed and has missed the last two games. This forced break for international matches should give him the time he needs for a full recovery.
Steve MacClean is also targetting the Southampton game as being ready to play.
