Sam and Dave Jones squad building for next season

Sam Hammam and Dave Jones are working on the squad situation at Ninian Park.

It's not been ruled out that contract offers may follow for a couple of the players that have already been released. Rules state that players who are out of contract have to be notified their time is up by a certain date. That's not to say a new deal might be offered. In some cases it's not going to happen. Nsungu for example has signed for Gillingham and there is no chance Phil Mulryne will be offered anything and highly unlikely Willie Boland or Martyn Margetson either. Neil Cox is hoping Dave Jones will require him for a squad place next season but he's ready to move on if not.

Sam Hammam has been speaking about the job ahead. He knows the task Dave Jones has to rebuild the team and balance the books.

'We were good last season, but we must strive to reach excellence,' Hammam told the Echo.

'The Coca-Cola Championship next season is going to be tougher than I can remember.

'Sunderland, West Brom and Birmingham City are coming down from the Premiership, while there are also Leeds, Wolves, Norwich, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday Southampton, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Derby.

'They are all Premiership clubs playing in the Championship.

'When you think of the three clubs promoted - Reading, Watford and Sheffield United - they have done well, but they don't have the Premiership pedigree of many other clubs.

'It's a who's who of football in the Championship - it's going to be exciting, it's going to be challenging.

'And in Dave Jones we have the manager to help us build a team to take them on.

'I am well connected in football after 23 years at Wimbledon plus my time at Cardiff City so far. Dave Jones is well connected and, in Peter Ridsdale, I have one hell of a good advisor.

'But 14 players out and 13 players in, which will happen if things go perfectly, means 27 individual moves - and that won't be easy.'

Sam mentions 27 player movements. Initailly that sounds ridiculous but it's not so.

City have released Nsungu, Margetson, Boland, Cox, Darlington and Mulryne from the first team squad. Byron Anthony, Jon Kift, Nicky Fish, Danny Parslow, Anthony Taylor, Lee Worgan, Lloyd Jenkins and Tareq Khalil from the reserves.

City have also lost Jason Koumas back to West Brom. Now the loan period has ended Jason is again a Baggie until we can strike a deal to bring him in on a permanent basis. Glenn Loovens has already signed.

The City players under contract still are Rhys Weston, Neil Alexander, Jeff Whitley, Cameron Jerome, Neal Ardley, Chris Barker, Paul Parry and Kevin Cooper. All of these players could leave if the right offer came in. Jerome is included in this list as it's likely the club will not stop him if the right money offer comes in. Otherwise they will be part of next seasons squad.

Dave Jones then has his first choice players that he would not want to lose. Glenn Loovens, Darren Purse, Joe Ledley, Ricci Scimeca, Steve Thompson and Andrea Ferretti.

Now we have 6 weeks or so before pre season starts for Jones to mould his squad for the new campaign.
