Viking's managing director Egil Ostenstad (formerly of Blackburn) says they are taking a gamble as they have not seen him play but are using recommendations from people like Mark Hughes.
Rhys arrives in Stavanger on Friday and will be eligable to play for Viking in a relegation battle on September 10th.
Here are the stories from Norway (thankfully translated this time)
http://www.fxt.no/tippeligaen/viking/article725511.ece reads:
Welshman signs for Viking
Viking has signed a contract with the back Rhys Weston (25). The
Welshman is going to play for the Stavanger team for the rest of the season.
Weston has in the past played for Arsenal, where he got one match as
trainee. For the last six years he has played forCardiff, where he has
played 170 league matches.
The 25 year old is now released from the Campionship-outfit, and has
opted to sign a half year contract with Viking.
-We're taking a gamble, as we haven't seen him play. But we've got good
references from Mark Hughes amongst others, says Vikings managing
director Egil Østenstad to TV 2 Nettavisen.
-But it would have been more of a gamble not to bring in a replacement
for the injured Alexander Gabrielsen and fredric lundqvist,he adds.
Weston has experience both as right back and centre back. Viking hope to
have him in place by tomorrow.
The relegation threathened team from Stavanger will not be bringing in
any more players before the transfer window closes Thursday evening.
