"There is no conspiracy regarding Dave's non appearance, it's just that he has asked me to come in," said assistant boss Terry Burton.
"We are always assessing our performances and in all honesty we have had a very bad week. We have played well for periods but have left ourselves too open and easy to play against and we will have to put that right.
"We got into the right areas without causing them too many problems but when we missed the penalty, and they scored against the run of play, we were always chasing the game.
"It was the supporters' day but it was a football match for us and the players and staff are as disappointed we were beaten as the fans but it hasn't been such a bad season and we will be looking for something from our last match."
New Ipswich boss Roy Keane was happy to start his new appointment with a win.
"Cardiff have had a wonderful season, remember, and it is tough when you have games like this one," he said.
"Suddenly you lose momentum, anxiety creeps into the crowd and that's that. It can sap you, the whole occasion of it and then getting the first goal is a big point.
"But the turning moment of the match for me was the penalty miss - to concede at that point, with the fans fully behind Cardiff, would have made it a very difficult ask for us.
"If he hadn't have saved it then it could have been a long afternoon.
"Cardiff are a good side and have done really well, but this happened to be our day."
