Anthony Pilkington's brace from two spot kicks has seen City close the gap on 6th place to just three points.
The two penalties, one in each half and both from blatant fouls, gave City a two goal lead that should have seen them win comfortably but a late Preston consolation made the final minutes a bit nervy.
Cardiff were the better and more adventurous team and if it had not been for Anders Lindegaard in the Preston goal and the woodwork then the score could have been far more embarrassing for the visitors.
Before coming to Cardiff Preston had enjoyed a four game winning run but like another decent team last week, Brighton, the Lillywhites left South Wales empty handed.
Speaking about his two goal hero 'striker' Russell Slade said
"People said Anthony was a makeshift striker but I really believe he could have a career up front.
"He's quick, he's clever and he can finish. He is loving scoring the goals and having the responsibility of playing up top.
"We are so pleased with his contribution and he is a bit unfortunate not to have scored a few more this season.
"He's doing a terrific job for us, he's got seven goals and could easily hit double figures this season."
