The main headlines in the Echo today tell the story of how Scott Young's daughter has survived a bout of meningitis. The youngster was taken ill a week last Monday and taken to hospital. Thankfully the illness was caught just in time and the child is now back at home.

"It was very serious, she was close to death," Scott told the Echo.

But he changed his mind when he realised his dad, Melvin, would have wanted him to carry on.

"I play for him, to be honest - it's as simple as that," he said.

Melvin Barker died of motor neurone disease (MND) two years ago, aged 54, and the experience affected Barker's football career as deeply as it did on a personal level.

When Chris' team-mate John Robinson lost his father, he gave up international football and considered quitting the game altogether.
