'Midfielders are always going to have issues'

medel_headerSince signing Gary Medel last week Cardiff City fans wil have seen the YouTube videos showing the Chlilean midfielders agressive aproach to playing football. The opposition should be scared and so should their pitchside furniture. But Malky is confident he has signed top quality.

“You always look at a player’s disciplinary record," said the City boss. "Midfielders are always going to have issues. But I won’t have to speak to him.

“He’s a very experienced international with 55 caps for Chile and that is something that shouldn’t be glossed over.

“He is 26, he has played in World Cup finals as well as the Boca/River Plate derby – one of the most frenetic in the world. He’s a top player and we’ll be fine.”

The signing of Medel was the third time Cardiff smashed their transfer record this summer following the signings of Andreas Cornelius and Steven Caulker.

And Mackay believes the club have picked up a player of the highest order after beating off interest from Everton.

“Gary played in La Liga against top players,” said Mackay.

“In February, Xavi came out and asked Barcelona to try to buy him, so that is his pedigree. I believe he also thinks he should be on the top stage and that’s important to have players who think they belong to be standing in the middle of Upton Park in the Premier league.

“He’s a leader and an organiser and we are delighted to get him.

“We tracked him for nine months and did not think we were going to get him earlier on in the summer, so we moved on to a couple of different targets for that position. But when it came up again we acted quickly.”

'El Pitbull' is set to be unleashed in the Premier League today.
