"He's a great player, Robbie, and is sure to add a lot to the squad," McPhail told the Western Mail.
"He should give the fans a lift, especially after losing Michael Chopra which was a bit disappointing because you never want to lose a player of his quality and the goals he gives. So to get someone in so quickly of Rob's class is excellent news.
"We're banking on him getting us some goals and I'm sure, with a record like his, he's going to be confident coming down here. If we put the ball his way, he'll do the business I'm sure.
"He's a top striker, left foot, right foot, head, he scores goals. He's very sharp-minded when it comes to the box. He loves scoring. He's just got an unbelievable record.
"At Leeds, he might not have played many games, but when he did play he'd score. He had a lot injuries, but he still showed what a great finisher he was.
"Possibly the challenge the gaffer has set for him here has got him going a bit. I think he fancies coming down here and helping us get where we want to be and that's in the Premier League.
"We've got a lot of young players in the squad and he can only help them. As far as football goes, Robbie has been there and done it, he's seen it all. It can only be good for us to have someone like that in the dressing room."
