"If we don't start believing in ourselves, we'll never get out of this and that must start with our home form against Ipswich Town," he said
"It's been a very frustrating period for us all and at Charlton we lost the plot in the last five minutes of the first half.
"We're trying to kick-start our season but are getting punished for everything and we're just looking for two wins to put us up the table, but it has not come.
"Now we're down there and it's become a real dogfight and it's not going to get much easier for us.
"It has become nail-biting stuff, we're working hard but getting punished and when we have chances up front we're not putting them away.
"There is no getting away from it - we're in big trouble and we need to get out of it."
Slightly better news for McNaughton is that he was called up for a Scotland B squad to face the Republic of Ireland in Aidrire next week.
