Kavanagh has twice referee'd Cardiff City games in the past. Last season he officiated the 2 - 1 home win over Derby County where he booked Peter Whittingham and Anthony Pilkington and also Jason Shackell of Derby.
Maybe a more memorable game before that was the 2015 clash between Leeds and Cardiff at Elland Rd where City won 2 - 1 in front of no away fans.
He cautioned six players including four Bluebirds. Lee Peltier, Sean Morrison, Aron Gunnarsson and Kadeem Harris went in the book that day.
Kavanagh is part of the 18 man select group of referee's set up at the start of the season.
His bio states: Kavanagh started refereeing in 1998 at the age of 13. Sixteen years later, he was appointed to the EFL Referees List and has now refereed over 50 EFL matches, including more than 20 Championship games. As part of the PGMO development programme, he officiated in the Dallas Cup in 2014 and was appointed as the fourth official for the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 2015.
This is his first match this season. In 2015 / 16 he officiated 32 matches issuing 114 yellow cards and just 3 red.
