The managers were speaking after Cardiff City drew 2 - 2 with Reading at the CCS.
Dave Jones said: "I don't think we got going until we scored. In the second half we drove forward and should have scored a second before they did as we were much the better side.
"But it was two poor goals to give away and we allowed them to get in front.
"In my book it was a free-kick in the last minute but we were penalised a lot during the game when we couldn't understand why.
"There is still a lot of football to be played this season and we would have liked a win but we have gained a point against another top team.
"In the first half we were too individual and open and were very concerned about getting any more injuries after losing Seyi Olofinjana at half-time."
Jones said his side's resilience could prove vital as they bid to win promotion to the top flight.
He added: "You have to have a never-give-up attitude as this is a tough division but decision-making must be better as we have been caught out while we were on the attack. You have to do the dirty part first and the players will be told that.
"We worked hard to get other players in during the transfer window without success but we still have a good enough squad here."
Reading boss Brian McDermott said he could not understand why so many minutes of added time were played.
He said: "I don't know where those seven minutes came from at the end of the game after the referee signalled that only four would be added on.
"Our goal came in the 92nd minute and it was quite bizarre that Cardiff's equaliser came in the 97th minute and I still don't know how the referee came up with all that added time.
"When we made it 2-1 I thought we had it won but then the referee came in with a massive decision to award a free-kick. I have seen it again and still can't understand why he gave that decision.
"Every single game we approach I do my homework and we have good players here with big hearts who do exactly what I ask of them.
"This is a tough place to come and Cardiff have great support but in the end it was a good point for us and now we have another massive game against QPR on Friday."
