After making the press wait for over an hour Mackay, flanked by CEO Gethin Jenkins spoke to the watching world.
And it was an impressive debut from the Scot who will hopefully be the man to take Cardiff that extra step into the Premier league.
“I see a club here with massive ambition,” said Mackay.
“I’ve played against Cardiff in the past, coached against them and managed against them and I realise the passion and commitment which comes from this part of the world.
“I know the fervent support this club has. I also see an infrastructure here which is exciting, with a beautiful new stadium and great training facilities.
“I look at the size of the club and I look at the passion and commitment that the people of South Wales have for this club.
“The board want to compete at the top end of the division and that is something that I will certainly be wanting to do too. I am ambitious. I want to be in the Premier League.
“What we will do is make sure we are in the race next season, we are going to be one of the clubs going for the title.
“It’s important now we work together. When you get players, staff, directors and fans on board all moving in one direction good things can happen.”
Mackay, 39, has been given a three year deal and will need to start building his squad sooner rather than later. City are reduced in numbers after the departure of the loan players and those out of contract. It's believed Watford have been paid around £300,000 in compensation.
The Malaysian investors are serious about getting the club to the Premier League and will have to back the new manager with funds to bring in players. Reports suggest money of between £5m and £20m being made available but I don't think that's of general interest. We've seen in the past what happens when clubs think you have extra cash to spend. Prices go up and silly money gets paid unnecessarily.
Watford issued the following statement on their website.
“Cardiff City has now confirmed Malky Mackay as its new manager – and he leaves with the best wishes of the Hornets’ leadership team.
“It means Watford FC is entering a period of time at the end of which the club will announce who will succeed Mackay as manager of Watford Football Club.
“I can’t hide the fact I’m disappointed to see Malky leave.
“I do, however, wish him the very best of luck and every success for the future as he begins work at his new club.”
