"I wouldn't say I was a left-back. I prefer playing in the midfield so hopefully I can play there for Wales," Ledley told the Western Mail.
"I've enjoyed playing back in defence for Cardiff and I've done well considering I hadn't really played left-back before.
"I started out playing on the left of midfield, then went into the centre, then back out on the left and then to left-back, so I've had to adjust to a few positions.
"But on the left of midfield is my natural position and, hopefully I'll get to play there with Wales. You get on the ball more in midfield. You get to run at people and pick out good passes, things like that. That's why I prefer it."
Ledley is in Dublin with Wales this weekend and with Jason Koumas out through suspension he's hoping for a possible start against the Irish.
"The Ireland game is a match we're all really looking forward to. It's the first football game at Croke Park and it's a sell-out, so it should be fantastic," said Ledley.
"You'll have great fans there. The Irish fans and Wales fans all mixing together. There'll be a great atmosphere.
"I hope I get the nod to start, I really do. I want to play every game. But there are quality players here so obviously I've had to wait. Even being on the bench would be something for me.
"But with Jason Koumas out, then maybe there's a chance I could play, you never know."
