City fans are divided in their opinions on McPhail who while at times is a quality footballer also frustrates with his average undynamic performances.
McPhail is clearly a favourite of Jones and the manager staunchly defended his player.
"Stephen is one of, if not the, most gifted player at this football club," Jones said.
"He brings a lot of quality to this football club and I don't think he gets the credit he deserves.
"Ask any other player here about him and they will all say how fantastic he is.
"But because he's not a hammer thrower who smashes people about he is probably not as liked as he should be.
"When he is at his best Stephen gives us a good tempo to our play.
"He gives us controlled play from midfield and on his game he is one of the best midfield players in the Championship."
McPhail will miss the next three games, starting with today's visit of QPR.
