Huddersfield confirm Cardiff interest in Jenkins

Terriers boss Mick Wadsworth said

"Cardiff City have asked for permission to talk to Steve. As far as I know they spoke on Sunday and I know that Steve has gone down there to try and conclude those talks."

Jenkins, 30, missed last weeks win over Cardiff through illness. The Welsh international defender is primarily a right back.

Jenkins has the right to cancel his contract at the McAlpine after not being paid his full wages. Things could turn nasty though as Huddersfield are considering paying him in full so that Cardiff would then have to pay a fee.

Report from the Huddersfield Examiner

TOWN manager Mick Wadsworth was today left reeling by the impending departure of skipper Steve Jenkins to Second Division rivals Cardiff.

And the Bluebirds, desperate to resurrect their challenge for automatic promotion after a 1-0 loss to Town and a 1-1 home draw with Oldham, could land the experienced 31-year-old defender without paying a fee.

Because Town players haven't been paid in full, they are subject to `hostile' bids from other clubs, who need only give 14 days' notice of registration.

Cardiff have taken advantage of that loophole, and manager Lennie Lawrence asked the McAlpine club for permission to talk to Welsh international defender Jenkins over the weekend.

Town chairman David Taylor was today checking the legalities of the situation in the belief that should the McAlpine club pay Jenkins what is owed during the 14-day notice period, they could then claim a fee.

He said: "It is true Steve Jenkins is one of a number of players who has not been paid in full under the terms of his contract.

"But he must give 14 days' written notice, and that hadn't happened at 9.00 today.

"It is my belief that within those 14 days, we have the right to remedy the breach in contract, which would prevent the player departing without the payment of a fee.

"Were Cardiff then to offer a fee, we would consider it in the normal way.

"This situation adds urgency to our ongoing attempts to get finance into the club by bringing in additional investors."
