"Don't read into it," Jones said of keeping his players in.
"We just wanted to try and make things better, see what we could do better, how we could do it, what is needed. It's not about recriminations so don't fall into that trap.
"We know we didn't play well. We got our noses in front twice and should have seen the game out.
"I think we looked nervous, the whole place seemed to be, and within that we did not play well. But we got ourselves in a position to win and it's one of the things we spoke about, because it's on your mind.
"So we wanted to know what can be done to try and lift everyone. We have got it off our chests and everyone had a chance to have their say."
The home players were furious in the first half when Craig Bellamy appeared to be fouled in the area by Barnsley captain Jason Shackell, and Jones believes his side should have had a penalty but accepted that it did not cost them the game.
"It looked exactly the same as the one QPR got yesterday," he said.
"It shows how difficult it is for referees. When we see it on the video it is (a penalty). The lad touches the ball and takes Craig out. One team got it yesterday and we didn't today. The referee had a bit of help on the line and he (the assistant referee) maybe should have seen it but they didn't and it didn't cost us the game."
Jones also confirmed that striker Michael Chopra's first-half departure was down to a hamstring injury, although the club will wait for a further medical check before determining how long he will be out for.
Barnsley boss Mark Robins, meanwhile, was delighted with the character shown by his side to come from behind twice.
He said: "A point was the least we deserved, we committed players forward and had midfield runners and we kept their big guns quiet for the most part, although it was goal of the century stuff for their first one.
"We showed character, resilience, all the things you expect from a battling performance away from home.
"We haven't picked many things up away from home this season but we can do. That belief has to be there, a bit more belief and we could have gone on and won the game."
Of Gray's double, he added: "We have had a number of strikers that have come in and had an opportunity, but that quality is still there. He has worked hard, been patient and he really deserves that.
"I don't mind who is in the side as long as they put in a shift, and he and Marlon (Harewood) linked up well today."
