It was completely unprompted and followed a message of condolence read out by stadium announcer Ali Yassine who informed fans of the news.
We were expecting to acknowledge the passing of City fan Mike Dye but when Ali offered condolences from Cardiff City FC to Brendan Rodgers and his family the fans offered their sympathies in the only way they could.
There then followed a minutes applause from the fans for Michael Dye which was joined by the Cardiff City players, staff, match officials, Wales manager Gary Speed and the visiting players, officials and fans from Doncaster Rovers (all of whom of course offered their respect to Mr Rodgers as well).
During the game Anthony Gerrard, after scoring City's first goal, dedictaed it to Mike Dye (see image) and his late grandfather by holding up his black armband.
It's been a tough week but occasions like the five minutes leading up to kick off at Cardiff City Stadium makes you reaffirm your faith in human nature.
