The full back is playing regular first team football after several seasons in Arsenal reserves. Now Gilbert has said he would not rule out a permanent switch.
'My heart is with Cardiff now and having been here for three months, I really like the place and the people here,' Gilbert told the Echo.
'But we will see what happens at the end of the season,
'Cardiff and Arsenal will talk then but playing in the Premiership with Cardiff does appeal to me.
'I'm just really enjoying my football here.
'Apart from my sending-off the other week, it doesn't get much better than this as I'm playing week-in, week-out.
'That's all I really want to do because at Arsenal I played nearly three years of reserve team football.'
On the sending off he said
'I do regret the sending-off. I was kicked by the same player three or four times previously and when we both fell to the ground, it was as much as I could take.
'When we both raced to our feet I did something I shouldn't have and I am now paying the price.
'It's been very frustrating the last couple weeks not playing - it's the first time I've been sent off in my career.
'When I was shown the red card my first thoughts were about missing three games.
'I've had to get over it and make sure that I'm fit and ready for the Burnley game next week and also try to force my way back in to the team.
'I'm still learning the game and I know I must learn from that incident.
'But I'm 19 and I'll think twice next time I am in a similar situation."
As he mentions Kerrea Gilbert is now available for selection for the home game against Burnley on Saturday.
The press have also reported that Dave Jones has enquired into the loan availability of Jeremie Aliadiere from Arsenal as a replacement for Steve Thompson. Kevin Campbell has taken over the strikers role but City are short on cover in the centre forward position. Arsenal it appears are unwilling to let Aliadiere go out at the moment.
Kevin Cooper has returned rom his loan spell at Yeovil Town and joined the squad for the trip to Colchester.
