Gerrard has joined City this summer along with Mark Hudson, both centre halves, and both are looking for a place in the team when City kick off the new season next week.
It's likely Mark Hudson will partner Gabor Gyepes when City face Scunthorpe in the opening League game but Gerrard is not going to accept second best and he will be pushing for a place in the team.
"You don't expect anything with the manager, to be fair, you just go out and train as well as you can and hopefully that you then get selected," Gerrard said.
"The only thing I have to prove is I can play at this standard, I've played a lot of games - nearly 170 - which is a fair amount for a young lad, so hopefully I can muscle my way into the side and stay there."
