Gareth Whalley in City talks

The 28 year old former Bradford City midfielder will meet with Lennie Lawrence to discuss personal terms. Whalley is a free agent after being one of 16 players released by Bradford when the club went into administration.

He is a left footed midfielder and is an ideal target for Lawrence who told the Echo today

"Gareth is a serious contender to join Cardiff. We just don't have a player at Ninian Park of his type. He is a left footer, he can pass the ball and has experience."

Whalley ended last season on loan at Crewe. Dario Gradi was keen to sign him up for this season but knew he could not match the terms offered by other clubs, especially like Cardiff City.

As for other players we know that Lennie is looking for another left sided player and a goalkeeper. The keeper is likely to be a loan signing, ideally from the Premiership, in the mould of Stephen Bywater who ended last season with City in a spell from West Ham.

The most likely player to fill the left sided place that Lennie is looking for is City's other loan player at the end of last season, Gary Croft. It's thought he is a far more likely candidate ahead of the other names linked, namely Robbie Mustoe, Marlon Broomes, Kevin Donovan, Mickey Bell, Darren Barnard and Chris Barker.

The reports on Gareth Whalley are very positive. Hopefully he will be our first major summer signing.
