1999 | Saints finish fourth from bottom in the Premiership but five points clear of relegation zone. Arrested by officers on Merseyside working on one of the biggest historical child abuse investigations of its kind, codenamed Operation Care. |
2000 | January - Southampton allow Jones 12 months' leave to concentrate on his court case and effectively end his three-year tenure at The Dell by announcing that former England manager Glenn Hoddle will take charge. December 5 - Cleared of any wrongdoing by a judge at Liverpool Crown Court after the case against him collapses. |
2001 | January 3 - Returns to management with Wolves and signs a three-and-a-half year contract. |
2002 | Wolves finish third in the league, losing 3-1 to Norwich in the play-off semi-finals. |
2003 | March 9 - Wolves make it to the sixth round of the FA Cup before losing to eventual finalists Southampton. May 4 - Wolves finish fifth in Division One to earn place in the play-offs. May 10 - Jones' side beat Reading 2-1 at Molineux in first leg of their semi-final play-off. May 14 - Wolves beat Reading 1-0 at Madejski Stadium to earn place in play-off final with 3-1 aggregate win. May 26 - Wolves finally earn promotion to top flight following a 3-0 win over Sheffield United in First Division play-off final at Millennium Stadium to end 19-year wait. |
2004 | May - Wolves are relegated from the Premiership after winning just seven games and conceding 77 goals in 38 matches. November 1 - Jones is reported to have parted company with Wolves with the club in 19th place following 1-0 defeat at Gillingham. |
