1956
Born August 17, Liverpool.
1971
Begins his footballing career as an apprentice at Everton.
1974
Signs professional contract as a centre-half at Goodison Park.
1975
Makes his debut for Everton aged 19 and goes on to be virtually an ever-present over the next four seasons.

Wins England Youth and Under-21 caps.
1979
Moves to Coventry for £275,000, but later suffers a career-threatening knee injury.

Recovers sufficiently to join Hong Kong club Seiko.
1983
Advised to stop playing on his return to England but makes 50 appearances for Preston over the next two years, scoring one goal.
1986-1990
Manages non-league Southport, Mossley and Morecambe.
1990
Joins Stockport as chief coach in July.
1995
Appointed team manager on the same day as Danny Bergara leaves the club in March.
1996-1997
Stockport beat Premiership sides Blackburn, West Ham and Southampton before losing to Middlesbrough over two legs in the Coca-Cola Cup semi-final.

May - Stockport finish runners-up in Second Division to champions Bury and win promotion to First Division.

June - Jones and assistant John Sainty move to Southampton.
1998
Saints finish 12th in Jones' first season at The Dell.
1999
Saints finish fourth from bottom in the Premiership but five points clear of relegation zone.

Arrested by officers on Merseyside working on one of the biggest historical child abuse investigations of its kind, codenamed Operation Care.
2000
January - Southampton allow Jones 12 months' leave to concentrate on his court case and effectively end his three-year tenure at The Dell by announcing that former England manager Glenn Hoddle will take charge.

December 5 - Cleared of any wrongdoing by a judge at Liverpool Crown Court after the case against him collapses.
2001
January 3 - Returns to management with Wolves and signs a three-and-a-half year contract.
2002
Wolves finish third in the league, losing 3-1 to Norwich in the play-off semi-finals.
2003
March 9 - Wolves make it to the sixth round of the FA Cup before losing to eventual finalists Southampton.

May 4 - Wolves finish fifth in Division One to earn place in the play-offs.

May 10 - Jones' side beat Reading 2-1 at Molineux in first leg of their semi-final play-off.

May 14 - Wolves beat Reading 1-0 at Madejski Stadium to earn place in play-off final with 3-1 aggregate win.

May 26 - Wolves finally earn promotion to top flight following a 3-0 win over Sheffield United in First Division play-off final at Millennium Stadium to end 19-year wait.
2004
May - Wolves are relegated from the Premiership after winning just seven games and conceding 77 goals in 38 matches.

November 1 - Jones is reported to have parted company with Wolves with the club in 19th place following 1-0 defeat at Gillingham.
