On Jason Koumas

'A lot of the things thrown at Jason are unwarranted and I've found him nothing but a nice, quiet lad who just wants to do well,' says Jones.

'We will have our disagreements as you do with anybody in the squad, but sometimes a move is the making of a player. The move is the best thing for Jason.

'He realised that for the last six months he hasn't done himself justice not playing. It happened to me many years ago - and the only person you hurt is yourself.

'What went on at West Bromwich Albion is now gone. He's under a new manager now and Cardiff City can give him a new lease of life.

'I can get the best out of Jason. I wouldn't sign any player if I didn't think I could get the best out of him.

'If I sign somebody and can't do anything with him, then why would I bring him to the football club?'

On the new season

"We've been written off - but I expect us to go into every game with the attitude that we can get something from it," said Jones.

"This is a really tough division. There are always one or two dark horses and hopefully we'll be one of them.

"With the players we've brought to the club and the ones we've kept, I expect us to do well.

"My philosophy as a manager is to always aim high. If you start looking at just staying up and finishing fourth-bottom then you might miss out by one place!

"We've attracted some big names here so we must be up there with the big clubs.

"We've brought in a mixture of young and experienced players. I feel you need experience at this level. They're all quality players.

"I'm asking the players to gel quickly. Most of the new lads are experienced and have moved before in their careers.

"They have won something at the clubs they've previously played for and I expect that to rub off at Cardiff."

"I had to bring in nine players but I still need two more before I have a complete squad that can go through the whole season," he added.

"It's well-documented that I'm trying to find strikers. We're fortunate to have two very good goalkeepers. I'm happy with the defence and the midfield.

"I want the strikers here to deliver the goods and I also want to put them under immense pressure. The only way to do that is to bring in good strikers.
