The match was played instead of the cancelled reserve team friendly in Portsmouth. Collins, Scott Young, Jason Bowen, Gavin Gordon, Stuart Fleetwood and Aaran Lee Barret were all involved in the game which saw Jason Bowen's team win 4 - 2 including a hatrick for triallist Cameron Jerome.
"James needs, deserves and will get a run in the first team this season," Lawrence told the Echo.
"But I would rather it be when we get back on track. It wouldn't be right to ask our youth players to sort it out for us."
It was suggested earlier in the week that Collins may get a chance this weekend.
Scott Young and Jason Bowen both came through 90 mins and are set to play for the reserves against Oxford Utd next Wednesday.
Lawrence said "It's too early for them to contemplate a return to first team action becuase they have been out for so long."
