A fairly tedious, drab game at CCS burst into life after the second half arrival of Sammy Ameobi.
Prior to the introduction of the summer signing both sides were offering little in terms of entertainment to a sparce sub 14,000 crowd.
Anthony Pilkington opened the scoring after being allowed to turn on the six yard line before Joe Mason fired into an empty net after Huddersfield fell apart at the back.
Ameobi introduced pace and quality that had been lacking prior his substitution in place of Kenwyne Jones. Jones had been one of City's better performers and his departure caused a few boos to be aimed at Russell Slade but it was an inspired change.
The win takes City second after Ipswich, Hull and QPR all lost this weekend.
City are at home again on Tuesday when Hull come to town.
