Most pundits have said it should have only been a yellow. Neil Warnock, who's Crystal Palace side face Cardiff this Saturday, said on Sky Sports on Monday that a yellow was the most it deserved.
The Cardiff City Chairman Peter Ridsdale confirmed on Monday that the club would appeal.
"I have talked it through with Dave Jones and we both agree we must appeal," Ridsdale told WalesOnline.
"Neither of us believe Darren deserved to be sent off. It was a challenge which had to be made and he had his eyes on the ball all the time."
The appeal will be heard by the Football Association of Wales later this week.
