Cardiff v West Brom. Match preview

Last updated : 24 November 2003 By Michael Morris
Remember the last time we beat West Brom? You must be one of our older readers if you do. It's been nearly 30 years since we've played tham and an incredible 43 years since we've enjoyed victory over the Baggies.

Then win came on Boxing Day 1960 with City 3 - 1 winners at Ninian Park. The following day the return match was played at the Hawthorns, that game ended 1 - 1. Both teams were in the Old Division 1 in those days.

The last time the teams met was on 19th April 1975. West Brom won 2 - 0.

Last season West Brom were a Premiership team, they only managed one season before dropping into Division 1 again but they have plans to go straight back up. They currently lead the table by 1 point. They are only 6 points ahead of Cardiff City.

Daniel Gabbidon faces his former club for the first time. Current boss Gary Megson did not get on with Gabbidon and sold him to Cardiff. Gabbidon has been diplomatic in his preparations saying

"I enjoyed my time with West Bromwich and to be honest this is just another game for me.

"There is no-one really for me to prove anything to and the only people who I will be out to impress are our fans."

City could have an injury worry over John Robinson. He was subbed at Milton Keynes and is said to have a slight calf strain. Willie Boland will step in of Robbo fails to make it.

With Graham Kavanagh still out Lennie is expected to name the same side and that means Richard Langley will keep his central midfield place. He enjoyed a good game alongside Mark Bonner against Wimbledon.

Peter Thorne was on the bench on Saturday and with only 60 mins of reserve team football in the last 6 weeks I would expect him to start on the bench again. Rhys Weston was not involved in the 16 on Saturday. Lennie will selcte from the following squad

Alexander, Croft, Vidmar, Gabbidon, Barker, Robinson, Langely, Bonner, Gray, Earnshaw, Gordon. Subs from Margetson, Prior, Weston, Collins, Boland, Campbell, Thorne.

A huge crowd is expected for a game that could see City get with 3 points of the top of Division 1.

West Brom will be without striker Lee Hughes after he was arrested after a fatal motor accident.

Gary Megson is hoping to have Daniel Dichio fit to partner one time City target Rob Hulse.

West Brom have won their last 6 games on the road. City are unbeaten in the last 7 games home and away and unbeaten in the last 7 straight home league games.

There will be a return to Ninian Park for Frank Burrows. He is No.2 to Gary Megson at WBA. Burrows was in charge at City for two periods in the late 80's and late 90's. On both occasions he took City to promotion.

Burrows has admitted recently he tried to offload Robert Earnshaw to Fulham but the then manager Kevin Keegan wanted a stronger more developed footballer. Cheers Kevin. In fact Earnie was out on loan at Morton when Burrows left the club at the end of January 2000.

Frank will always be respected by City fans and will get a good reception at Ninian Park.
