Cardiff v Scunthorpe. Match preview

Striker Jay Bothroyd had to come off with a knee injury after just 18 minutes of last Saturday's final pre-season friendly against Valencia, while star midfielder Joe Ledley also took a knock towards the end of the encounter, but both are expected to be okay and should feature.

Whether Ledley retains the captain's armband, though, remains to be seen with his long-term future at the club the centre of much discussion.

Striker Ross McCormack, will not be moving to Hull for now. Cardiff have rejected a £3million bid for the striker who is likely to feature in the season opener, although Bothroyd and Michael Chopra are tipped to start.

Summer signings Mark Hudson and Anthony Gerrard will compete with Gabor Gyepes for a starting berth in the centre of defence, while fellow new-boy David Marshall is expected to get the nod between the sticks.

Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins faces an anxious wait over the fitness of two key defenders.

Record signing Rob Jones could be denied his competitive debut by a groin injury suffered in Tuesday's friendly against Wolves, while David Mirfin is battling against an ankle injury he sustained during the club's pre-season tour.

Captain Cliff Byrne is likely to deputise at the heart of defence, although it is unlikely he will be joined by Kenny Milne who is in the final stages of his recovery from a knee injury that has kept him out for a year.

Other than Jones, Mirfin and Milne, Adkins has no fitness concerns as the Iron prepare for life back in the Championship. New signings Josh Wright, Michael O'Connor and Adam Boyes are all available for selection.
