Report from Paul Evans

Lots of positives to be taken from today's 4-0 over a Bournemouth team which contained a smattering of players with first team experience.

Alan Lee played the full ninety minutes and, although I don't think his display will have Lennie picking him on Saturday, he seemed to be going as strong in the last minute as he was in the first - it's good to see him back.

A bonus was to see Scott Young, who I thought was some way short of fitness, also play the full game in a holding role in midfield and his display was a reminder that he had started his City career in a similar position all those years ago. Rhys Weston also played the full game and certainly seems fit enough for the first team if needed.

Although you always need to bear in mind the quality of the opposition, the team played well today with the more senior players seemingly showing more interest and commitment than usual - perhaprs Paul Wilkinson had something to do with this approach.

I can remember going to reserve games a couple of years ago and constantly seeing our yougsters struggling against bigger and stronger opponents. Some of these youngsters are still around and have grown a bit more, but others coming through now look stronger and better able to cope physically with reserve team football - today it was Bournemouth who were the boys against the men.

There are signs that a few of our much vaunted youngsters are begining to deliver the goods - besides Stuart Fleetwood who has attracted most attention, Nicky Fish has established himself in the reserve team and, while he doesn't really look ready for first team action yet, he certainly doesn't look out of place at this level, Michael Hayward looks a nice player to me as well and Byron Anthony is another who seems to cope well with reserve team football.

I also saw Joe Ledley for the first time today and he looked a lively performer on the left hand side of midfield, he was brought down to get us our penalty and was inches away from marking an impressive performance with a goal.

The game was to all intents and purposes won in the first twelve or thirteen minutes. Scott Young had missed a good chance before Andy Campbell opened the scoring after three minutes with a clever lob which apart from the fact that it was with his other foot on the other side of the pitch and he sidefooted it reminded me of his goal in the Play Off Final (I'm not going mad honest, there were similarities with THAT goal!).

Ten minutes later, Alan Lee got the biggest cheer of the afternoon from the crowd when he netted with a good header from a corner. After that Bournemouth came into the game a bit more and had a few half chances, but the City were always on top and Nicky Fish came the closest to adding to the City's account in the first half with a long range effort which flew just wide.

After the break, the City were well in command and James Collins slooted in a good penalty after 58 minutes, Ledley, Fleetwood (on as a sub for Richard Ingram) and Lee all came very close to further goals before with two minutes to go another sub Michael Hayward (on for Ledley) set up Fleetwood for what seems his customary goal nowadays with a neat bit of play.
