City's top scorer this season is out of contract this summer and can leave as a free agent to a Premier League club or possibly follow Joe Ledley to Celtic.
Cardiff resisted the urge to sell Jay in January and hoped his goals would fire Cardiff to the Premier League. It's unlikely now that Jay will stay at City if he has the chance to play in the top division.
A whole list of clubs have been linked to Bothroyd, who cost City £300,000 three years ago. The latest are Celtic. Hoops boss Neil Lennon was at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday to see City lose at home to Reading.
Bothroyd's agent Sky Andrew told the Echo,
“Jay will go away for a couple weeks, relax and mull over his options.
“This is not the time to make any decisions.
“He has played a lot of games this season and needs to clear his head before making any commitments.
“When he comes back off a break, we will sit down and see what offers are on the table.
“Jay has been at Cardiff for three years and likes playing there, but we have a bit of time before anything has to be done.
“Let the dust settle first and then we will see what’s what and take things from there.”
Bothroyd, Adam Matthews (already on his way to Celtic), Chris Burke and Gavin Rae are the out of contract players at CCS while we will lose loan players Stephen Bywater, Jason Brown, Jlloyd Samuel, Seyi Olofinjana, Jason Koumas, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Craig Bellamy. Although it is hoped that Bellamy could return.
