Jay was speaking after City's 1 - 1 draw with Sheffield Utd on Wednesday night.
"Their centre-half [Nyron] Nosworthy said it was a penalty," he said.
"I lined a shot up in the box and he's pushed me on to the ball.
"When you are running at that pace, the slightest bit of contact can knock you off balance and that's what he did.
"I was disappointed first of all not to get a penalty and then second of all that he [Danny McDermid] booked me."
"I'm disappointed because I have to miss two games."
Bothroyd, who will now miss Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace and next Tuesday's visit of play-off chasing Leicester, hit out at the standard of refereeing in the Championship.
"The last two bookings have been totally ridiculous," he added.
"I think that's the difference between the Premier League and the Championship. Players need protection.
"Sheffield United had five guys on yellow cards and they should've had a couple of sendings off - it's inconsistency."
But Bothroyd, who claimed his 11th goal of the season with a fine strike, insists Cardiff are focusing on the teams immediately above them who they now trail by two points.
"We are disappointed not to get the right result but in the last three games, we've got seven points," he said.
"The people were are chasing, Swansea [in fifth] and Leicester [in fourth], dropped points so it's a point gained.
"We are not looking below us, we're looking up."
