Newspaper reports claim that Cardiff will need to make a bid of £5m to get Jose Fonte from Southampton.
City are said to have made two bids already with the latest £3.25m. Fonte played in 38 games for Southampton last season and would be a ready replacement for Steven Caulker who went to QPR last week.
Fonte has rejected a new contract offer from Southampton.
