The Scottish striker (right) had been quiet in front of goal until that point but his turn and shot, after being set up by the impressive Rudy Gestede, was too hot for Robert Green to handle and the ball hit the back of the West Ham net.
Cue delirious scenes as the capped 1250 away fans went wild.City saw out the remainder of injury time without too much trouble and the day belonged to Malky Mackay and his new look City side while West Ham and new boss Sam Allardyce were left to rue missed oportunities and look at what could have been.
It was a first win for Cardiff at West Ham since 1950 and it brought the home side down to Championship level with a bump. After signing players like Kevin Nolan and Matt Taylor and still having Scott Parker and Rob Green in the side West Ham expected to see off a new look, much changed Cardiff City.
Early on West Ham pressed and throughout the game created chances that were superbly blocked by David Marshall who was in top form.
City did create some chances forcing Green to save on a few occasions. Mashall's saves and a Whittingham clearance off the line kept the score at nil nil until Gestede, on as a sub robbed the West Ham left back, His cross into the box looked to have eluded Miller but the Scot controlled the ball and turned to fire home through Green's limp hands. A sterner wrirst may have deflected the ball away but the England keeper failed to get a decent contact and Cardiff had taken the points.
All the attention since the game has been on Allardyce, West Ham and Scott Parker. Bad news sells i suppose, let them wallow while we have a ball.
Superb City. Well done.
