Despite the roughness City played their way around trouble and the first half flew by with City dominant. A poor final touch though kept the score at nil nil until the last minute of the half. Jay Bothroyd picked up on a defensive error and struck sweetly from 20 yards to give City a deserved lead.
The tempo of City's attack dropped in the second half but still chances were created. But as so often happens when you don't take your chances you get caught with the sucker punch.
A throw into the box found Quinn and though Marshall saved his initial effort the ball sat up for the Utd attacker to poke the ball home.
Cardiff went for the victory and sub Michael Chopra curled an effort onto the bar and a last gasp scramble saw Utd clear and the final whistle blow.
Still a point earned giving City a 5 point gap over 7th place but really it should have been a home win.
The Bullies from Bramall Lane didn't deserve to get a point but it's not how but how many at the end of the day. Jay Bothroyd was given a yellow card for diving and has now reached 10 for the season meaning he misses the next two matches.
City kick off procedings on Saturday with a lunchtime 12:45pm kick off at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace.
