Bellamy banishes Boxing Day Blues

Last updated : 26 December 2010 By Michael Morris
City have suffered 5 draws and 5 defeats since a 1999 victory over Reading but that record was broken today with a massive three points.

Earlier in the day QPR hammered Swansea 4 - 0, both teams having a player sent off, and it was vital Cardiff capitalise on the Jacks demise.

Seyi Olofinjana scored in the first half and Craig Bellamy secured the victory with a deflected effort inside the last 10 minutes.

The victory was even sweeter when it was confirmed that Leicester had come from behind to draw with Leeds meaning City recaptured 2nd place with a game in hand.

A bumper crowd of over 24,500 saw a much improved City performance and a home debut from the impressive Chris Riggott. There was no Jay Bothroyd amidst rumours he could be leaving in January or that he was left out because the extreme cold was too risky for his hamstring.

A fine display from Coventry keeper Kieren Westwood kept the score down but Coventry created chances and while the score was 1 - 0 there was always a danger City would surrender their lead. Today was our day though and the game was killed off when Bellamy scored in the 83rd minute.

In less than 48 hours time Cardiff are away at Watford. The game at Vicarage Rd kicks off at 3:00pm on Tuesday. Watford's trip to Ipswich today was postponed.
