Cardiff City are now unbeaten in the last 7 games in Division 1. When did we last acheive that? John Heyda is on the case.
You've got to go all the way back to the 1980-81 season to find the last time Cardiff City put together a string of seven or more in a row without a loss while playing in the upper divisions. That year the Bluebirds were playing in the (old) Second Division for the 18th time in 19 seasons.
After losing to Preston North End 3-1 at Deepdale on November 8, 1980, City rattled off nine in a row without a defeat (three wins and six draws) before losing to Oldham 1-0 at Ninian Park on January 31, 1981. Here's the string:
Nov 12 - City 1 Wrexham 0
Nov 15 - Blackburn 2 City 3
Nov 22 - City 1 Luton 0
Nov 29 - Derby 1 City 1
Dec 6 - City 1 Grimsby 1
Dec 26 - Bristol City 0 City 0
Dec 27 - City 3 Swansea 3
Jan 10 - Luton 2 City 2
Jan 17 - Leyton Orient 2 City 2
After their November 8 loss to Preston at Deepdale, City found themselves 20th and in the relegation zone with a mark of 5-1-10, good for 11 points. By the time the unbeaten run had reached nine with the 2-2 draw at Orient on January 17, City were up to 16th with a record of 8-7-10, good for 23 points. They were only a couple of points clear of the drop zone, however, and the Bluebirds wouldn't put a lot of distance between themselves and the drop for the rest of the campaign. In fact, after January 17, City did themselves no favours, managing only a 4-5-8 mark to the end of the season.
It's a good thing that City managed this November-to-January unbeaten run as it got them just enough in the points department to escape relegation. The Bluebirds wound up 19th in the (old) Second Division in 1980-81 with a mark of 12-12-18, good for 36 points. Preston finished with 36 points as well, but wound up 20th and relegated on goal difference. City's goal-difference record of -16 (44-60) just shaded Preston's -21 (41-62).
